Replays, streams, and where to actually play

The last chapter is the practical plumbing — the things nobody teaches you but you need from day one: where the racing is, how to watch it, and where to actually play.

Theory: the global calendar

You don't need to follow everything. Start with one or two jurisdictions and learn them deeply.

• Hong Kong (Sep–Jul) — two tracks, ~800 horses, the deepest handicapping in the world. Transparent form, extraordinary prize money. The purest place to learn.
• UK & Ireland (Mar–Nov flat) — the historic centre of turf racing. Complex class structure, hugely variable going.
• France (Mar–Nov) — home of the Arc; enormous PMU pools.
• Japan (year-round) — the best-funded programme on earth.
• Australia (year-round) — sprint-centric, fast turf, precocious horses.
• UAE (Nov–Mar) — the Dubai World Cup carnival at Meydan; dirt and turf, international shippers.
• USA (year-round) — dirt-centric; the Breeders' Cup is the global dirt championship.
• Scandinavia (Apr–Nov) — where MWP was born; smaller fields, multi-race pools dominate.

You've already read all of these. The worked examples across this course were spread deliberately over the map — Hong Kong (Sha Tin, Happy Valley), Britain (Ascot), Australia (Randwick), the UAE (Meydan), and Scandinavia (Jägersro, Bro Park). Reading the form is the same craft everywhere, but the texture differs: Hong Kong hands you transparent sectionals and gate data, Britain gives you Betfair money to read, the UAE is all international shippers arriving on a new surface, Scandinavia runs small fields where one trainer's habits move the whole price. Pick the circuit whose form you most enjoyed working through, and start there.

Replays, streams and where to play

Every jurisdiction has its own replay source, its own pools, and its own account rules. A reference card:

Hong Kong — HKJC.com and the Racing Touch app give free, world-class data: full racecards, sectional times for every horse, full replays, gear changes, vet records. Arguably the best free racing-data resource anywhere. Betting is a pure pari-mutuel monopoly through an HKJC account — no bookmakers, no exchanges.

UK & Ireland — replays on Racing TV (paid, the full archive) and Sky Sports Racing; Racing Post is the form bible. Bet on the Betfair / Betdaq exchanges (sharpest prices, won't restrict winners), the fixed-odds books (Bet365, William Hill, Paddy Power — Best Odds Guaranteed, but they limit winners), or the Tote, which handles World Pool bets in Britain.

Japan — JRA.go.jp (English at japanracing.jp) for racecards, replays and data. Direct betting needs Japanese residency; international access comes via commingling partners.

Australia — Racing.com (free streams and form), Sky Racing (subscription). Bet via TAB.com.au or corporate books — but bet-limiting of winning accounts is rampant; Betfair Australia generally accepts winners.

USA — free replays and streams through funded ADW accounts (TwinSpires, TVG/FanDuel Racing, NYRA Bets); Equibase for free past charts, Daily Racing Form for past performances and Beyer figures. Pari-mutuel only, licensed state by state.

France — Equidia (TV and streaming) and PMU.fr for racecards, results and replays. Betting runs through the PMU monopoly; the Quinté+ is the marquee daily exotic.

Scandinavia — ATG.se / ATG Live for free streams and data. Betting is through the ATG tote; the flagship multi-race pools are V75 (7 races, Saturdays) and V86 (8 trotting races midweek) — huge pools, low takeout on the flagship products.

Reading a results chart

After a race, the chart is where the real form lives. It shows the official finishing order and margins, the fractional/sectional times, each horse's running position at every call, the trouble-in-running comments, and the gear and weights carried. The finishing position tells you who won; the chart tells you how — and the "how" is what you carry into the next race.

The practical rule on accounts

Most jurisdictions require local residency and ID, and KYC/AML checks are universal — passport, proof of address, 24–72 hours to verify. The clean route for big international meetings: bet World Pool through your local tote partner (Tote UK, PMU, ATG and others commingle into the day's World Pool). For day-to-day grinding, use the local pari-mutuel or exchange in the jurisdiction you specialise in. Always bet through the deepest, sharpest pool you can legally access.
