Trip notes, comments, running style and the bias mark

Spot the runs that were better or worse than the number

The rating says how well a horse ran. These four things tell you why, and whether the number makes the horse look better or worse than it was.

Trip marks

Small letters in the Trip column:

MarkMeaning
SSSlow start
W, 3W, 4WRaced wide. The number says how many horses wide
TTrouble in running
EXAn excuse: the run can be forgiven
EWon easily

A mark in full colour cost the horse a lot. A faded one cost a little. Hover a mark to read what it means.

Running style

Each run is tagged Frontrunner, Presser, Midpack or Closer. The tag on the runner line is the horse's usual style.

The BIAS mark

On some days a track favours one part of the field: the inside, the outside, the leaders or the closers. When that happened, the run carries the word BIAS in the Trip column (shortened to B when the row is busy or the screen is narrow). Hover it to see what the bias was that day:

The marks are not handed out freely, so a horse with two or three red marks in a row is worth a second look.

How reliable is this?

Trip marks and running styles are read out of race comments and reports with the help of AI. They are right most of the time, not every time. When a mark matters to your decision, read the comment and watch the replay. Bias marks come from a calculation, not from the comments. None of these are available in every country or for every race.

See it on the card: open any racecard and press 📖 Tour at the top right. The tour points at each of these things in turn. Start the tour on the free sample card.
